SPLINTS HELP BASEBALL PLAYERS

Catchers often sustain hyperextension injuries and contusions of the thumb. Fabrication of splints that prevent thumb abduction and hyperextension, are low profile (fit within the catcher’s glove) and support the thumb to reduce pain and further aggravation.

INSPIRATION!

Recently, we were able to donate our skills & expertise abroad: Crystina Santos, staff hand therapist at HRA, traveled to Haiti to volunteer with a group of rehabilitation providers. In this capacity she fabricated custom positional splints for traumatic peripheral nerve lesions & custom static progressive splints for severely stiff joints. She collaborated & shared her knowledge with general physiotherapists to facilitate appropriate progression of therapeutic exercises and functional activities  for ongoing rehabilitation.

Maintaining composure while seeing people at bedside was initially challenging for me, but I found that a smile paved a short road to connecting. Despite their compromised position, most smiled back and were so receptive to us.
