adaptive writing

Writing requires pinch force between the fingers and thumb. If an individual has a hand condition, writing can become painful and/or difficult. Below are some adaptive solutions to decrease discomfort while writing. These adaptations can be broken down into four categories:

  • Modified writing devices are redesigned writing tools to provide better ergonomics and/or decrease the difficulty while writing

  • Adaptive writing equipment simplifies writing by modifying external components involved with writing

  • Writing modifications augments conventional writing tools to provide better ergonomics and/or decrease the difficulty while writing

  • Adaptive writing techniques modifies the user’s approach to writing in order to decrease discomfort and/or difficulty

Modified Writing Devices

Pen Again reduces the amount of pinch strength required and ergonomically fits around the index finger to make writing more comfortable.

Weighted pens help individuals who tend to tremor while writing. The added weight reduces difficulty by increasing stability while writing.

Slant boards place the writing medium at a slight angle improving ergonomics, decreasing arm reach, and improving visual perspective.

Weighted gloves also help individuals who tend to tremor while writing by placing the stabilization weight in the hand instead of the writing implement.

Writing Modifications

Foam tubes enlarge the shaft of writing tools to make them easier to hold during use. These foam tubes can decrease fine motor control.

Grips provide a more ergonomic position to improve comfort without compromising motor control.

Writing Claws act as a brace that holds the fingers in position which decreases the necessary pinch strength and reduces joint stress while writing.

Adaptive Writing Techniques

  • Avoid repetitive wrist bending and forearm rotation

  • Minimize or slow down writing intensity and rest more frequently

  • Use a light grip on the pen

  • Use enlarged grips with tools or kitchen gadgets

  • Change writing grip between the index and middle finger (see image to the right)
